Surtsey Island is the youngest island in the world. It s situated in the Westman Island archipelago. The island was “born” in 1963 in an volcanic eruption underneath the ocean. The eruption lasted for 4 years.

You can hire a Ribsafari Boat and take a trip to Surtsey. We do not have scheduled trips to the island. If you want a private tour to the island the trip takes roughly 3 hours.

During our normal trips you usually can see the island in distance.

More about Surtsey

Surtsey erupted under sea in 1963. Today, only scientists are allowed to visit the island. The reason is that they are trying to figure out how flora and fauna develops in pure nature. There is a small hut on the island for scientist to spend their time and live while they are studying the nature. They are only there during summertime as during winter the wind and weather can be too rough.

In July 2008 Surtsey was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its protection and for providing a unique scientific record of the process of colonization of land by plants, animals and marine organisms.

In Eldheimar museum is also the Surtsey exhibition with all available information about this unique island.
